Beech Class

In Beech Class, the Year 5 children are taught by Mrs Jordan. She has been teaching for almost twenty years and is our Maths Lead.  At Lambley, we teach the Mastery approach in Maths. This means that we are developing the use of resources and vocabulary to support us as we solve mathematical problems and explain our thinking. We are becoming more fluent and confident mathematicians, willing to apply our knowledge and skills to problem solving situations. Mrs Jordan also runs the weekly Chess Club.

On a Tuesday afternoon, we are also taught by Mr Robinson for PE and Miss Barnes for French or Music.

Our Topics

In Autumn term, our Topic is ‘What have the Romans ever done for us?’ We learn all about who the Ancient Romans were, where they came from and their impact on Britain. In particular, we will find out how their religion, their expansion of the Empire and their culture influenced Britain and how Queen Boudica tried to defeat them. In Science, we will examine Properties of Materials, including dissolving and irreversible changes, and Forces, including gravity and friction.

In Spring Term, our Space-themed Topic question is ‘Is there anybody out there?’ In this Topic, we research the history of Space travel, discover more about the planets in our Solar System and explain why day and night happen on Earth.

In the Summer term, our Topic focus is on the country of Greece. In the first half term, we find out why Greece is such a popular tourist destination compared with Britain by examining its climate, culture, food and exports. The Ancient Greeks are the main focus of the second half term. We will examine how the Ancient Greeks influenced the Ancient Romans through their gods and goddesses, art and culture, political structures, the Olympics and their myths. In Science, our first unit is Animals including Humans where we will discover the human timeline and discuss the changes humans undergo from birth, through puberty and into adulthood and old age. We will then learn about Living Things and their Habitats where we will examine life cycles and find out how animals and plants reproduce.

Home Learning

Every term, we are giving the opportunity to produce a piece of ‘creative homework’ based on our topic. This might involve baking a cake, producing a piece of art or writing or making a sculpture!

If you would like to help your child learn at home, please do read with them and ask them questions about what they are reading. Also, you could check their understanding of their times tables. There are spelling lists in their planners that the children can also practise.

Here are also some useful links to websites that can help with home learning:
