At Lambley Primary School, we value and nurture every child as an individual. Each child’s uniqueness, interests and passions are supported and celebrated, and we believe that when children feel they truly belong, they thrive.

We are a family who learn together and care for one another. Our school is an inclusive, welcoming and safe place where every child, family and member of staff is valued, cared for and supported, whatever their background, beliefs, abilities or circumstances. We celebrate the differences that make our community special and help our children understand that diversity enriches all our lives.

Our 3 R’s of Ready, Respectful and Resilient are at the heart of this work. We teach our children to be courteous, thoughtful and inclusive to everyone, to listen well, to be honest and empathetic, and to treat others as they would like to be treated themselves. We are proud that respect and tolerance are woven into everything we do, from our curriculum and daily routines to the relationships we build across our school community.

We also recognise that promoting equality means removing barriers and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed, achieve and make their mark on the world. We work in partnership with families, pupils, staff and governors, and we welcome feedback from our community to help us keep improving.

Through this commitment, we ensure that every child at Lambley feels they belong, has a voice, and is ready to reach for the stars and take on ‘Life beyond Lambley.’

Our Commitment to the Equality Act 2010

Lambley Primary School is committed to meeting its duties under the Equality Act 2010. The Act protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation on the basis of certain characteristics. In a school setting, the protected characteristics that apply to pupils are:

• Disability
• Gender reassignment
• Pregnancy and maternity
• Race
• Religion or belief
• Sex
• Sexual orientation

Age and marriage or civil partnership are also protected characteristics, but they apply to our staff rather than to pupils.

We treat every member of our school community fairly, and we do not tolerate discrimination, harassment or victimisation of any kind. We take positive steps to make sure that all children can access our curriculum, take part in school life and achieve their best.

Public Sector Equality Duty

As a local authority maintained school, Lambley Primary School and its Governing Body have a legal duty under the Equality Act 2010 to have due regard to the need to:

1. Eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct prohibited by the Act.
2. Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
3. Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.

We meet this duty by considering equality in our policies, our curriculum and our decision-making. Our Governing Body oversees this work, and we review our equality objectives regularly.

 

Enriching Our Curriculum

We believe that children learn best about equality, diversity and inclusion when these ideas are woven into everyday learning. To supplement and enhance our curriculum in this area, we work with Picture News and No Outsiders. We use both in our assemblies and in class discussions.

Picture News uses current events and thought-provoking images to spark discussion. It helps our children to think critically, share their opinions respectfully, listen to different viewpoints and understand what is happening in the world around them.

No Outsiders uses high-quality picture books and stories to explore difference, identity and belonging. It helps children to understand the Equality Act 2010 in an age-appropriate way, and to learn that everyone is welcome and that we are all part of our school community.

Together, these resources support our 3 R’s. They help children to be Respectful of others, Ready to take part in thoughtful conversations, and Resilient in standing up for what is right. They also help every child feel that they belong and prepare them for ‘Life beyond Lambley.’

As well as year group specific books, this also provides children and their families the opportunity to talk through issues around DEIB. The library offers texts around subjects such as: empathy, kindness, compassion, similarities and differences and being proud of who you are (amongst other topics).
