Birch Class

Welcome to Birch Class!

We are a lovely class of up to 30 curious Year 2 learners, led by the Deputy Head Mrs. Shardlow. She is supported by some wonderful helpers who come in regularly to listen to the children read (at least twice a week!) and give that extra boost to anyone who needs a little help mastering a new skill.

Mrs. Shardlow is also our school’s SEN advocate, with a focus and passion for making sure every child gets the support they need with classroom adaptations and personalised learning.

What’s Happening in Year 2?

Our learning is full of exciting adventures! We follow the Year 2 National Curriculum, along with the Nottinghamshire RE syllabus and Computing Framework—but we make it as fun and hands-on as possible! Here’s a sneak peek at what your little one will explore this year:

Autumn Term

First Half – The Victorians
Step back in time with Charles Dickens’ classic ‘Oliver Twist’! We’ll be exploring the big question: Was life always hard in Victorian Britain? Expect dramatic stories, amazing vocabulary, and even a Victorian adventure day at Perlethorpe or Newstead Abbey!

Second Half – A Christmas Carol
It’s festive fun with Dickens again! We enjoy a special Year 2 version of ‘A Christmas Carol’, mixing it with the Muppets’ Christmas Carol and with a rhyming text. There’ll be diary writing, persuasive letters, and comparing the two fantastic stories.

Spring Term

First Half – The Leaf
Follow a brave polar bear’s journey and learn about climate change! We’ll even visit a Wildlife Park to meet real polar bears.

Second Half – The Great Fire of London
Drama, storytelling, and fiery imagination! We’ll re-create history, write newspaper reports, and craft powerful poems about one of London’s most famous events.

Summer Term

First Half – Traction Man
It’s superhero time! We’ll invent our own superheroes, create comic strips, and even design superhero logos with polystyrene printing.

Second Half – Who Lives There?
Knights, castles, and dragons. With books like ‘Dragon Post’ and ‘The Journey’, we’ll write fact files and explore real castles like Nottingham or Warwick.
