Over the course of this week Maple class homework has been starting to come in! They are amazing! We have some very clever and creative people in Maple! The children were set the task of making something using recycled materials – linking in to the respecting our environment element of our topic. We have also been busy making our Father’s day or special person cards, they look fab! We have been planting sunflowers for our science topic on plants. We are conducting an experiment to find the best conditions for growing. We have already identified the 7 life processes test your children on MRS NERG to see if they can remember the 7 life processes.
Word of the week: Respect
Welcome back! I hope you have all had a great half term break and are now refreshed ready for the next 7 weeks! Out topic this half term is ‘Love where you Live.’ We will be celebrating successes of our County, looking at the United Kingdom and breaking it down to where Lambly and Nottingham are positioned. We will be looking at cultural diversity in our communities and learning more about tolerance and respect. We aim to make good use of Gedling Country park with a little class trip to play on the park. In English are looking at Romeo and Juliet and linking this in with the famous Play writer William Shakespeare.
I look forward to seeing your homework creations.
Our Word of the week is: TOLERANCE
On Monday 21st May Maple and Beech had some exciting visitors come in to School to support our Religious Learning of the Muslim Faith and Islam, Mohammed and Reverend Ken from the Religious Education Resource centre joined us to deliver an exciting workshop. We learned all about the Muslim Faith and the important customs of Islam. We learned so much and it was lovely to identify that Islam is a religion based on Respect.
I’m sorry for not updating you with the children’s wonderful work last week! We were busy preparing a class assembly which was absolutely fantastic! Maple class have one extremely proud teacher! This week we have started to look at key features of Diaries and are working towards writing our own diary as if we are Lila. In Maths we are having fun with Statistics before moving onto Length and Measure.
Our word of the week is ‘Enormous’
Have your children seen the news about the recent Volcanic eruption?
Have a great week :@)
Hello everyone, I hope you have all had a fabulous Easter break – don’t worry its not quite over yet we still have a few days left before we return! Thinking ahead for our new topic, it would be a fabulous help if over the next few days you could collect as many small drinks bottles as you can and suitable newspapers for our papier mache. We need them for making our erupting Volcanoes. We also need flat pieces of strong cardboard to stand our volcanoes on.
Looking forward to seeing you all soon! Mrs Shardlow x
This week Maple class have been taking the opportunity to show off everything they have learned this term! We have also used this as a chance to show me what I need to teach again. We have been working so hard and only have 3 more tokens to collect before our class treat. The afternoons we have been working hard on making our Roman Shields as well as drawing our own Roman Soldiers. Roll on Easter so we can all have a well earned rest!
Next half term our topic is Volcanoes and we are studying the text ‘Firework Makers Daughter’.
Hope you all have a super Easter! Have fun and I hope the Easter bunny brings you some lovely chocolate eggs!
Welcome back Maple Class. I hope you all had a great half term. This term we are continuing with our Roman topic as we still have lots to learn. We are looking at the text ‘Escape from Pompeii’ The first part of this term we are continuing with our exciting writing. Using our 5 senses to add excitement to our work and extended noun phrases are now a non negotiable . Throughout the term we will be moving on to non fiction work looking at writing diary entries and reports on Pompeii and Naples.
Our word of the week is ‘Glimmering/Glimmered’
“The sun was glimmering over the sea” Cody
“I looked out my window and saw the sparkling bay of Naples glimmering in the sunlight” Amaliya
Maple class have had an extremely busy week! We have finished our green screening and we are now waiting for our class treat – Mrs Shardlow has promised us popcorn and a cinema afternoon to view our hard work. Take a look at some of the back ground pictures we have produced in the pictures below.
We have finally finished our Myths of Romulus and Remus, we are all looking forward to copying these up in neat on Wednesday – working hard to achieve our handwriting pens! We have produced our warm writes and have visited our Editing stations to improve our work independently before Mrs Shardlow marked them.
We would like to wish you all a fabulous half term and a lovely Valentines day. When we return back after the holidays we are looking at the text ‘Escape from Pompeii’ – if you get chance maybe have a read of this over the holidays.
This week has been an exceptionally busy one for all of us but I would like to say how proud I am of my class. We are working so hard to develop challenge in our learning and to push ourselves to be the best we can be. We have set up new learning areas in the classroom and opportunities to display our learning and challenge ourselves in a safe and positive way. Maple class are brilliant at supporting each others learning and encouraging each other to be the best that we can be! Proud Teacher alert!
Our word of the week is ‘Reasonable’
Challenge question: Can you find out who Julius Ceaser is?
Many apologies for not having a blog published last week. For some reason this did not go live on the website. Our first week back started with a Roman invasion. We had a great day researching what Romans ate through dissecting Roman poo to give us clues into their diets. We made Roman bread and taste tested a selection of food that Romans may have eaten. We had a special Roman visitor who told us what life was like in Roman times and what it would have been like to be a Roman solider.
In order to extend our vocabulary we are introducing a Word of the week which where possible we will try and use in our writing. The word of the week for the first week back was Mythical. This week our word of the week is Outraged. In literacy we are looking at the Myth Romulus and Remus, acting it out so we are able to internalise the text before writing our own Myth.
Our Guided reading skill for this half term is skimming and scanning to find key words to answer questions based on the text. Our whole class guided reading text is a Myth called Daedalus and Icarus.
Our science focus is light – we have already been exploring that darkness is the absence of light.
Happy New year to you all and welcome back to Maple Class! Over the next term we are learning all about the Romans. We are focussing on the question ‘What would life be like as a Roman?’ We launched our topic having a great Roman Day. We investigated what Romans ate through dissecting Roman Poo, we taste tested a selection of foods that Romans may have eaten, we also made and ate Roman bread – it was delicious. WE had a visit from a Roman Solider and learned lots about what life was like in Roman times. In topic this week we will be focussing on Where Roman invaded and the growth of the Roman Empire. We will also be learning about the great Roman leader Julius Ceaser. Our reading skill that we are focussing on over this half term will be ‘Skimming and Scanning’ for key words to locate information to answer comprehension questions. We are also working on extending our vocabulary. Our word of the week for this week is Mythical.
On Monday 11th December Lambley Primary school went on a school outing to The Palace Theatre in Mansfield to watch Jack and the beanstalk. We had a fabulous time. The pantomime was very funny.
Codey enjoyed the 3D part because when the actors were singing the Ghost part they did not notice the Ghosts were flying around.
Lottie “My favourite part was when Simon was singing the songs about big bottoms”
Cody “I liked the hand and the spider in 3D and when the tongue came out!”
Ben “My favourite part was the 3D except my ears hurt with all the screaming”
We also had treats at the interval! We are very lucky and Maple class would like to thank all of the Parents who organised, planned and made this happen through fund raising.
On Monday 4th December we went to our houses to a produce a product for our Festive Christmas School Fair. Cromwell made lots of Ginger bread men for decorating and also some little jars of biscuits to sell. It was great fun! We worked extremely well together as a group, supporting our younger children and taking it in turns. We used our maths skills for weighing out the ingredients, we used our reading and comprehension skills to follow the instructions.
This week Maple class have been busy learning all about how Rivers are formed. We previously looked at the water cycle and we are now making links with how this impacts the formation of rivers. After planning how to make our 3D model of a river formation and making notes about the different aspects of a river formation we then started to create our 3D masterpieces. Take a look at our work in progress. Next week are we adding signs to explain the process. It was a very busy and messy afternoon, but we had great fun doing it!
Today Maple Class sent a team of footballers to take part in a football tournament. They played 4 different teams and won every game! Bringing home a fabulous first place trophy. We would like to congratulate the team: Billy, Codey, Issac, Charlie, Taya, Callum and Amaliah! Great victory well done!
Last week was Awesome Author and Brilliant Book week. Maple class had a fabulous week exploring books taking part in plenty of reading. In Science we took part in a STEM activity about the Little Ginger Bread Man. We had to work together to save them from the fox and help him cross the river. Lots of discussion and problem solving took part in small groups to eventually design and make a contraption which would enable the Ginger Bread man get from one side of the water to the other side safely. We explored what would happen if the Ginger bread man got wet! certainly something we didn’t want to happen to our ginger bread man!
This week Maple class have been enjoying our reading week. They have been spending time with their book buddies enjoying a range of different stories. Keep an eye out to see if Maple class are able to save the Ginger bread man and help him get safely across the water without getting on the Foxes back. We will have some great photos to show you next week!

There have been several questions this half term around coverage of topic and in particular reading. This half term we continue with our topic of ‘Where does water come from?’ In our topic lessons we are looking at rivers and the journey of a river linking this in with the water cycle. The water cycle is a year 4 science objective so will be covered in more depth next year, but this understanding is fundamental to be able to answer the question ‘Where does water come from?’ In science we are focussing on Forces and Magnetism. We have started to look at the force push and pull we will be investigating different surfaces and the impact this has on the amount of friction a car has when travelling down a ramp. We will link this learning to a challenge question around Gravity, Mass, weight and Newtons Law. In English we are now developing journalistic skills, gathering evidence for our newspaper reports and for our news conference. Reading in Maple class takes place for 2 hours a week. Instead of just reading a book we are now looking at lots of different stimuli to help us transfer our inference and retrieval skills. We take part in whole class Guided reading – children are encouraged to contribute, but will not be forced if this makes them feel uneasy. Instead of putting children on the spot they are able to indicate that they would like to contribute by placing a cube on their desk which I will remove for them to let them know when it is their turn to read. As the year progresses I am sure that more children will feel more confident with this Guided reading approach. Before reading the text, as a class we look at significant words in the text we find the definition of these words by using a dictionary and put the word into a sentence to demonstrate an understanding of the meaning of the word. We also look at a picture clue from the book and make predictions about what we think the book will be about and think about questions we would like to find out. Lots of learning takes place each day in Maple! We are working very hard.
