Category: Elm Class

This week we had the amazing opportunity to go to Lowdham School where we took part in a multi-skills P.E. event alongside other year 1 classes around the area. It was a fantastic morning and the children got stuck into lots of different physical activities. They all thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.

We have also focused on a piece of writing this week called ‘Taking Flight’ about a boy’s adventure with his Granddad. The children are currently rewriting the story and it has been fantastic to see them including everything we have been learning this year in our literacy lessons.

Our word of the week for next week will be thoughtful.

This week Elm Class are going to be adapting the story of Jack in the Beanstalk. The children have loved this story, and we have spent a lot of time looking at difference adaptations of the story. Meanwhile, the children of very excited about our bean plants starting to sprout. Last week we planted some more seeds, however the children don’t yet know what they will grow into. There may be some interesting surprises ahead.

Over the next term our focus will be on plants and how they grow. This is a very exciting topic for the children and it has been fantastic to see their enthusiasm as they’ve planted their beans already – one has even started to sprout already. We are going to be planting lots more beans and seeds over the next couple of weeks, which is super exciting. We have also been learning how plants grow and what they need to be able to grow.

Our word of the week this week is ‘Temperature’.

Over the last couple of weeks the children in Elm Class have been getting stuck into their writing. We have been reading the stories ‘Poles Apart’ and ‘Lost & Found’ – a favourite of the class – and writing our own versions of the story. We are currently deep into writing our own stories, remembering to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces, as well as pushing ourselves to use words that make us say ‘Wow!’. We’re looking forward to finishing them and showing them to you soon. We’re incredibly proud of them.

Our word of the week this week is climate.

Elm Class have had a fantastic start to the term and we’ve been so excited to get back to our learning. Over the next few weeks we will be thinking about the book ‘Poles Apart’, which tells the tale of a penguin and a walrus who travel the world on the way to meet each other. It’s a great little book and the children are looking forward to learning all about the characters and the different countries they go to.

Our word of the week next week will be temperature.

This week Elm Class delivered their class assembly which I’m sure you’d agree was a great success. We had the opportunity to show some of our planet artwork, as well as retell the story of Bob and his adventures as the ‘Man on the Moon’. The children had great fun rehearsing and performing for their class assembly. Thank you so much to all who were able to see our performance and we really hope you enjoyed it.

Our word of the week next week is material.

Elm Class have been learning all about Bob over the last couple of weeks and his amazing adventure to the moon in the ‘Man on the Moon’ story. The children have been creating their own aliens and planets too in preparation for writing their own space stories, which is very exciting. We are also beginning to prepare for our class assembly on the 8th February which will be about ‘Bob’ and space. We are really looking forward to it, we hope you are able to join us.

Our word of the week this week is ‘astronaut’, which fits with our topic.

There’s only a few days left of the term but Elm Class have a very busy week ahead. Besides our trip to the church carol service and Christmas party (both on Wednesday 20th December), we have lots of fun activities over the week. We’ll be making Christmas cards and New Year calendars, alongside our usual English, Phonics and Maths lessons with a Christmas theme. The children are very excited about this and are all looking forward to being super creative with our work, which also happens to be our hero superpower this week. It’s going to be an exciting week!

Yesterday we all had the pleasure of going to the Pantomime at the Mansfield Palace Theatre to see their production of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. The children had a fantastic time, having the opportunity to hear hilarious jokes, see 3D ghosts and get up and dance as well as hear a great retelling of the story. We will be thinking about the story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ next term in our Growing topic, and I know the children are now very excited about this.

In other news, we have had our final preparations for our Nativity which is looking fantastic. Feel free to come along and enjoy it this afternoon (Tuesday 12th) and tomorrow morning (Wednesday 13th). It can’t be missed!

Hello!

Over the past week and over next week we are practising for the Foundation and Key Stage 1 Nativity. The children have been very excited practising for the performance, which is coming along very well. We can’t wait to hear the lovely songs and various dances we will be performing.

Please support us by popping along to the school office and grabbing some tickets. It can’t be missed!

Hello there! Over the last few weeks Elm Class have been doing some fantastic pieces of art, ranging from oil pastel pictures to fruit and vegetable sculptures.

We have been thinking about the artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo, an Italian artist, who created paintings using fruit and vegetables to represent harvest and the seasons. In Elm class we have made sculptures, inspired by Arcimboldo, using fruit and vegetables. They were fantastic.

We are all very creative in Elm Class and are looking forward to showing you more artwork soon!

Hello! Last Thursday we had the fantastic opportunity to have a Teddy Bear Picnic. The children brought in their favourite teddies, all of different shapes and sizes. They also brought in their favourite books and had the chance to share them with the class and tell us why they are their favourites. Afterwards, we had a lovely picnic in the school garden with some lovely food. In the afternoon we made teddy bear puppets and made up our own stories using them. It was such a fantastic day and we loved listening to the children’s favourite stories and learning about their teddies.

Hi,

This week Elm Class have been working incredibly hard and thinking about the history of Lambley. A couple of weeks ago we were very fortunate to have a walking tour of the village by our lovely tour guide, Chris and John, who spoke to the children about how Lambley has changed over the years, the significance of various buildings, and famous historical figures from the village. We learnt a lot and have spent a great deal of time creating posters to promote the village, as well as creating our own crest for the village. Soon the children will be able to take them home for you to have a look.

Hi! This week we have been busy writing a story about a little girl who finds a bubble bottle left on the beach. When she blows the bubbles, they take her on a journey through the sky and seas. The children have really enjoyed writing their stories this week and we have unleashed our very creative imaginations to tell this story. We’re looking forward to sharing our stories soon!
