On Monday 21st May Maple and Beech had some exciting visitors come in to School to support our Religious Learning of the Muslim Faith and Islam, Mohammed and Reverend Ken from the Religious Education Resource centre joined us to deliver an exciting workshop. We learned all about the Muslim Faith and the important customs of Islam. We learned so much and it was lovely to identify that Islam is a religion based on Respect.

This week, in Science, the children explored Friction.  We talked about the ways friction could affect the way we ride our bikes and then we designed and carried out experiments to explore how different materials affect friction using cars and ramps.  We applied our findings to real  life and discussed how the recent snowy weather affected driving and walking when on icy surfaces.

Our word of the week is “impaled” which means pierce with a sharp instrument.  We found this word in our guided reading about dinosaurs but we also know that the Romans would have impaled enemies with spears.

This week, the children worked hard to put together their class assembly despite having little time to practice due to the snow!  They put together a brilliant show which demonstrated their knowledge of Romans and some brilliant Art and Writing.

This week our word of the week is “midst” which means “in the middle of”.

On Tuesday, we started to practice our class assembly ready for our performance on Wednesday 7th March.  Unfortunately, snow days have impacted on our rehearsal schedule so we’ll do our very best to put on a good show!

In Maths, we have started to look at fractions and are continuing to practice the speed of our times tables using TT38 which can be found on www.myminimaths.co.uk.  Everyone’s getting quicker which goes to show that practice makes perfect!

This week’s blog is written by By Jacob Cottrell & Isla Davies.

On Wednesday 7th February 2018, some of the Y5’s + Y6’s did some bike-ability training with Michel and Andrew (trainers) At 9:30am we first checked our helmets before we started the course. We started by going to the Astroturf and checking that our bikes were stable and road worthy. The trainers set up a circle of cones and we cycled around them many times. After we had to go inside and outside of the cones, when we stopped they told us about checking behind to see if a biker/car was behind us. (In the course it was just our friends behind us.) Then we put our bikes aside and we had our break time. After break we did some emergency stop practice and a road in-between the cones. (The road was just two symmetrical lines.)  We would have to drive through and don’t hit the other person on the right, then try to get into a nice space and ride around the circle again. After we had our lunch we went through the rules of the road. One was do not ride on the pavement, and another was you need to check behind you instead of listen for the cars. This is because an electric car or a normal car might be silent. Then we walked with our bikes up to the road and had a ride to the hill. (We rode on the road) When we got to the hill we rode up and stopped our bikes at the pavement. Then we practiced the ‘stop U turn’ and the ‘moving U turn.’ After we did an hour and half practice of riding on our bikes we went back to school with 15 minutes till home. In the end we really enjoyed it and can’t wait for Monday where we get another lesson on this!

Thank you Andrew and Michel for the bike ability training.

Our word of the week is “withered” because it appeared in the myth that we’re looking at in guided reading.

“No rain fell and the grass withered.”

This week, Beech Class have been describing characters’ emotions using a technique called “Show not Tell”.  To do this effectively we have been discussing how characters show their emotions in their expressions, voice and movement.  Here is Sofia A and Niall’s paragraph:

He was enraged as he saw someone breaking his model.  He clutched his hands together and his face went red.  He fought back tears that were dripping from his eyes.  He ran to the corner wanting to scream as loud as he could.

Can you guess which emotion they were describing?

This week’s word of the week is “crevice” chosen from our guided reading.  Holly was able to explain to the class what the word meant and her definition was almost exactly the same as the dictionary definition!

This week, the children have been reading different versions of Romulus and Remus which is a famous Roman legend about how the city of Rome was founded.

The children created their own puppet shows and put on some super performances!

Our word of the week is “altercation” which means a “strong argument.”  We chose this word because Romulus and Remus had a violent altercation which resulted in Remus’s death.

Beech Class had an amazing launch to their Roman topic on Thursday 11th January.  We were visited by a Roman soldier who taught us how the Romans fought and explained what the Romans did to entertain themselves.  In the afternoon, we tried and evaluated some “Roman” food and designed our own mosaic patterns.

We can’t wait to find out more about the Romans now!

Beech Class are extremely proud of their finished water lilies.  They took real care when mixing and selecting colours to finish off their clay work.  I’m sure you’ll agree that they look amazing!

We have studied Monet’s art and used it as inspiration to make clay waterlilies.  I’m sure they’re going to look even more stunning once they’ve been painted!

Beech had a great week last week.  Year 5 met a famous author – Steve Bowkett, we all heard stories from other teachers and we finished reading week with a fun quiz all about famous authors and their characters.

Beech Class are looking forward to Book Week this week. We will be sharing some of our favourite books with others, carrying out different story-related activities and testing our book knowledge with some book-related games.

Year 5 had great fun in their Science lesson on Friday!  We used milk and vinegar to make casein plastic and then did another experiment where we added bicarbonate of soda to vinegar to create carbon dioxide.

Welcome back Beech Class.  This week we are looking at negative numbers, newspaper reports and Monet watercolours.  Another busy week!

Last week, Beech Class found out about the water cycle in our Topic lesson.  See if you can remember what these terms mean:

  • Evaporation
  • Condensation
  • Precipitation

Take a look at this video to remind you of the process:

Last week, Beech Class enjoyed a trip to Magna.  The visit supported our learning for our rivers topic as well as our Science lessons on materials.

Beech Class have been exploring materials in Science.  Year 4s have been looking at the properties of different materials and deciding whether they are liquids, solids or gases.  Year 5 have been testing materials looking at the different properties of different objects.

What a busy week Beech Class had last week! From amazing performances in “What a Knight!” to a lovely day out at Gedling Country Park, we managed to have fun and work hard!
